What is Art?

What is art? Is it splashing blue and red paint onto a blank canvas? Is it playing one of Hadyn’s concertos on the violin? Is it figure-skating and doing pirouettes on the ice? The answer is all of these things and more. The Encyclopedia Brittanica describes art as “a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination.” An artist is someone who produces this object.

Art has been explored since the birth of civilization itself, and has grown and matured from our earliest ancestors where it was only used for utility to modern day, where art drives culture, technology, and innovation. Think of an ergonomically designed chair, or the latest fashion in women’s clothes. Think of the design of currency, or the preparation of fine cuisine. Art reaches its tendrils out to all walks of life, from the dry heat of Mexico to the rainy shores of Great Britain.

I myself dabble in the arts. I have been doing art since I was a pre-teen and I have found solace in the visual arts such as drawing, painting, sketching, animating, and a little bit of sculpting. I am also an avid violin and guitar player, outside the visual arts. Currently, I have come up with an idea for a comic series about a cyborg who is stuck in an abstract world and must escape before his battery dies and he is stuck in that world forever.

I hope that you enjoyed this blog post and continue doing art yourself, whatever type it is.
